Allen Bradley HMI Training on RSView 32 and RSLinx Classic

This Allen Bradley HMI training course software download simulates several RSView essential tasks and RSLinx Classic to give learners hands-on experience. This training software (the ViewTrainer ) includes RSLinx communications, DDE topics, linking to an Excel spreadsheet, creating a new RSView project, RSView graphics, an interactive quiz, a 51-page laboratory manual, and much more.

The course uses the same approach instructors typically use when having students work and learn on a live HMI SCADA system. First, the learner reviews a video of the required task. Then, it guides the students as they perform the task themselves using the simulator. The primary purpose of this course is to be an introduction to HMI (Human Machine interface). Even though AB/Rockwell migrated RSView 32 into their new software platform 'Rockwell Automation's FactoryTalk View SE'. This course still briefly introduces how Allen Bradley/Rockwell HMI works. This earlier version is easier to learn as it only has the distractions of some of the lesser-used functions in the newer version. Great for those new to the HMI concept.

rslinx download

Screen recording of a student using DDE RSLinx simulator.

Hands-on HMI training via the RSView and RSLinx simulations.

By having 18 interactive RSView simulations and the 2 RSLinx simulations, the learner will gain a better understanding and retain it longer. This example is a screen recording of the student setting up a DDE link from RSView to an Excel spreadsheet using one of our simulators. This DDE feature of RSLinx allows a manager in an office to view the spreadsheet to see live data from the machine or system that the HMI interfaces with.

ViewTrainer HMI Training Videos

The HMI training video montage below we put together with some of the videos found inside this course. There are also 19 videos in this course to show learners the steps for a particular task before asking them to go through the walk-through simulation.

Allen Bradley HMI Course Simulators and Screenshots:

Below are screen recordings of a student interacting with some simulations built into this Allen Bradley HMI course and screenshots from the course.

RSLinx Communications

To work with Allen Bradley's HMI, the technician must know how to set up communications with the PLC and the PanelView (User touch screen hosting RSView HMI program). This skill is needed to set up communication between the HMI and the PLC and upload/download your new HMI program to PanelView. They learn in this course how to use AB's RSLinx Classic software. Above is a screen recording of students using the simulator to learn and practice.

rsview project example

The above screenshot is from our section on 'Creating A New RSView Project'. We use videos for this section to keep the course cost low as, there are too many settings and options to simulate each. Note: In 2022, AB replaced RSView32 Software with Rockwell Automation's FactoryTalk View SE. For the basics covered here, the process taught will be the same. AB and Rockwell are the same company, so they migrated RSView into their new FactoryTalk platform.

hmi graphics simulator

Creating a new HMI display screen, regardless of the brand you are using, is similar. This section uses a simulator so the learner can understand the process. As seen here, the course explains many of the most commonly used screen creation tools for drawing buttons on the screen, animating objects, etc.. Above is a screen recording of the student using the simulator.

hmi alarms simulator

The section on HMI alarms is also a simulated walk-through, teaching the learner along the way. While the exact screens/process will vary from HMI brand to brand, the learner gets familiar with the different settings involved in working with HMI alarms. So, this section will help the student understand the options with Rockwell Automation's FactoryTalk View SE settings. Although the process in that migrated version of RSView will be different. This information will be helpful to the beginner, regardless of brand/version.

hmi data logging

The section on HMI data logging is also a simulated walk-through, just like the previous alarm section, teaching the learner along the way. While the exact screens/process will vary from HMI brand to brand, the learner gets familiar with the different settings involved in working with HMI data logging. Most included simulators also have a little "Key Points" icon for the user to tap. As with all the concepts in this HMI course, learning this will be helpful to the beginner, regardless of the HMI brand/version. RSView 32 is easier to learn on than other brands.

HMI Runtime example

All HMI software has two modes: Edit and Runtime. Edit to create the interactive screens in the HMI and Runtime mode to run and test the designed screens. This little section (5 screens) uses RSView as one example of how to switch to runtime and explains the concept. As with all the course sections, there is audio narration and the option to show the transcript.

HMI Training Course - Features:

The ViewTrainer course also includes a button to access Rockwell Automation's extensive industrial automation glossary of terms standard to HMI.

Every screen has audio narration, text transcript, and the ability to bookmark pages. There is also a built-in glossary. The ViewTrainer comes with an interactive, self-scoring final exam! Along with the interactive "self-scoring" final exam, the student can print an HMI training certificate of completion upon scoring 85% or better.

School and Company Multiple User Licenses:

Built into the Site and Enterprise-licensed versions of this course software is a mini-LMS.

With the site licenses, students can print a certificate of completion, saving the student's score to a "student log file" accessible by Site and Enterprise license holders. That feature and others make the site license purchasing option perfect for Technical Schools, Community Colleges, Universities, Apprenticeship Programs, and company training departments.

HMI Training PDF

Included with the course is an HMI course PDF Laboratory Manual. It consists of optional questions and one or more exercises for each of the eight sections. Some exercises require the instructor to make Rockwell's RSView 32 software available to students/employees. Site license holders may modify the lab manual to apply to Rockwell's FactoryTalk View SE if RSView software is unavailable. The content in the lab manual is optional for students/employees and is not needed to take and pass this course. Answer key to lab manual questions and exercises is also provided to instructors with a site license.

Because this Allen Bradley HMI course starts from a beginner level and uses interactive simulations to make learning easier, this course will also work for capable students without previous PLC experience. Individuals taking this course should follow the recommended learning path at the bottom of this page and take our Motor Controls and PLC Basics course first. RSView32 HMI (Lab Manual Sample).

The 51-page Lab Manual PDF is an excellent instructor aid.
